For treatment of respiratory bacterial infections.Ceftiofur is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic.

Description It is a suspension of fine particles which is precipitate on standing. It turns to a uniform milky white suspension after shaking.

Pharmacology

(1)Pharmacodynamics: Ceftiofur is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, which have good activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative organisms (contain β-lactamase bacteria). The sensitive bacteria are Pasteurella multocida, hemolytic Pasteurella, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Salmonella, E. coli, streptococcus, staphylococcus, etc. Some of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus resistance are drug resistant. The antibacterial activity of the product is better than Ampicillin and the activity against streptococcus is better than Quinolones. It is usually used to treat acute respiratory infections of cattle (such as bronchial pneumonia caused by Pasteurella), bovine mastitis, swine actinobacillus pleural pneumonia, etc.

(2)Pharmacokinetics: Ceftiofur is non-absorbed by oral and rapidly absorbed by administer intramuscularly and subcutaneously. Widely distributed, not through the blood-brain barrier. Drugs in blood and tissues at high concentrations, to maintain effective blood concentration of a long time. Ceftiofur is metabolized rapidly to desfuroylceftiofur, the primary metabolite. Excretion is via the kidneys after be metabolized to inactive metabolites. The product has a long half-life.   The half-life in horse, cattle, sheep, swine, dogs, fowl and turkey is 3.2h, 2.5h, 2.8h, 14.5h, 4.1h, 6.8h and 7.5h, separately. Drug interactions: Synergistic or additive activity may occur when used concurrently with aminoglycosides. Serum levels and serum half lives are increased by administration of probenecid .

Indications For treatment of swine respiratory bacterial infections.

Dosage and administration

In swine: Administer intramuscularly at a dosage of 3.0-5.0 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight. Treatment should be repeated at 24 h intervals for a total of 3 consecutive days.

Adverse reactions

1. May cause Gastrointestinal flora disturbance or double infectio.

2. Have some renal toxicity.

3. May cause the hair removal and itching in cattle.

Precautions

1. Shake well before using and protect from freezing. Used in 14 days after opening.

2. Adjust the dosage for animals with renal insufficiency.
